The forex market is 24/5, but not every hour is equal. Volume and volatility cluster around the four major regional sessions — Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York — and when two of them are open at the same time, the tape does most of the work.

Why the London × New York overlap drives XAUUSD volatility. For roughly four hours a day (about 17:30–22:30 IST, depending on DST), traders on both sides of the Atlantic are actively hedging, positioning around US data releases and reacting to the New York open. Gold is priced in dollars, so US flows dominate; add European institutional participation into the same window and you get the tightest spreads and the biggest range of the day. Most professional intraday XAUUSD strategies explicitly time entries to this window.

Why news candles kill grids.A 12:30 UTC US CPI release routinely moves gold 100–300 points in under a minute — that's a full grid step or more in the wrong direction, with no ability to close intermediate levels at your intended price. Grid and martingale EAs that don't pause around red-folder news are the single most common reason otherwise-decent systems blow up. Read the calendar; either skip the news window or size the grid so it can survive it. Both are valid; ignoring the calendar is not.
